Shoals Impresses In trial Win
Outstanding mare Shoals (Fastnet Rock-The Broken Shore, by Hussonet) has sent an ominous warning to her Everest rivals with an impressive trial win at Cranbourne this morning, reports racing.com. The three-time Gr1 winner, who will resume in the Gr2 McEwan Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on 8 September, finished strongly in her 800m heat to defeat stable-mate and fellow Everest contender Santa Ana Lane. “I thought she trialled really well,” said jockey Tim Clark, who made a special trip down from Sydney to partner the blue blood. “She can be a lethargic track worker and trialler, apparently, but that ground she enjoyed. I thought the last 100m of the trial, when I got a little bit more serious, she really savaged the line.” Clark said Shoals had improved from her 3YO season. “She can give you a bit of a false feel at times because she is so small, but she's got a big engine,” he said. “She's a strong mare and she obviously hasn't grown a lot from her three-year-old year to now, but she's probably thickened up slightly. She's definitely a pocket rocket.” Trained by Anthony Freedman, Shoals will represent slot-holder The Star Entertainment Group in the $13 million The Everest (1200m) to be run at Royal Randwick on 13 October.
