Hamada Melbourne Cup Bound

Monday, 20th August 2018

Godolphin's highly promising stayer Hamada booked himself a trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup when running out a stylish winner of the Gr3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (13 furlongs) at Newbury on Saturday. Trained by Charlie Appleby, Hamada's decisive 2.5 length victory was his fifth in a row and boosted his already imposing record to 5 wins from 7 starts and over £100,000 in earnings. Appleby's assistant, Alex Merriam, told Sky Sports: "Definitely Australia is the plan now. We are very pleased with that." He added: "James (Doyle) said he saw it out well and that the ground was just on the soft side for him. He thought that Australia would suit him well."
