VIC Jockey Media Ban

Thursday, 2nd August 2018

The Victorian Jockeys' Association has instructed its members not to talk to the media while it attempts to negotiate a pay increase with Racing Victoria, reports racing.com. The media ban means that Victorian jockeys are expected to boycott interviews with all media while industrial talks take place. Victorian jockeys currently receive a fee of $200 per ride, but the VJA says this is inadequate given jockeys' increased workload n recent years. A spokesman for Racing Victoria responded: "We note that the jockeys have been directed not to conduct any media interviews, which is to the detriment of the industry, in particular punters, owners and racing fans. Racing Victoria remains committed to reaching a fair and reasonable outcome on the fees paid to jockeys competing in Victoria at the earliest opportunity."
