McDonald To Ride Menari

Tuesday, 31st July 2018

James McDonald has been booked to ride richly talented colt Menari in the $13 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 13 October, reports AAP Megaform. Trainer Gerald Ryan said McDonald was the top pick of Menari's connections, which comprises owner and breeder George Altomonte and Everest slot-holders Max Whitby, Neil Werrett and Steve McCann. "James has first refusal on the ride and was the unanimous choice among all concerned," Ryan said. "We had a list of five and he was on top with Mr Altomonte, the slot holders and myself. James has been out to Rosehill to ride him." The Snitzel colt, who had tie-back surgery in the spring and missed the autumn after injuring a joint, is expected to launch his Everest campaign in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on 1 September. "He weighs around 612 kilos and has been pleasing everyone in his work," Ryan said. "He has no problems with his breathing and all is going well."
