Charles Road On Cup Path

Tuesday, 31st July 2018

Lance O'Sullivan is confident that Kiwi stayer Charles Road has the requisite talent to develop into a Melbourne Cup horse this year, but the Matamata trainer understands it won't be easy securing a start in Australia's most famous race. "There's certainly a lot of water to go under the bridge to get there," O'Sullivan, who trains in partnership with Andrew Scott at their Wexford Stables base, told NZ Racing Desk. "To win it would be a dream. It would be exciting just to have a runner." A winner of the Gr3 City of Auckland Cup (2400m) in January, Charles Road then ran sixth in the Gr1 Auckland Cup (3200m) before travelling to Sydney where he won the Gr2 Chairman's Quality (2600m) and placed third in the Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) in the autumn. "We know he can run two miles (3200m) and be competitive at the highest level, but we'll take it one step at a time," O'Sullivan said. "He'll go to Te Teko on the 7th of August and have a quiet barrier trial. We'll make a call after that where to go with him." O'Sullivan added: "He likes Sydney and there's the Metropolitan so whether we take that path I'm not sure. The weather will play a big part in the decision and he will need to show he's coming up well. He usually takes three or four runs to come right so we'd like to see him do something to keep pressing on for the Cup."
