VCAT Set Aquanita Appeal Date

Thursday, 26th July 2018

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday set a tentative date of 12 December to hear the appeals relating to the Aquanita doping scandal, reports the Herald Sun. The hearing is expected to run for two weeks. Trainers Robert Smerdon (disqualified for life), Stuart Webb (four years), Tony Vasil (three) and Liam Birchley (one) are appealing against bans for the raceday treatment of horses over a period of 7 years from 2010 to 2017. Meanwhile, there is growing speculation that Victorian racing authorities have identified a "whistleblower" in the case which has been described as one of the "darkest chapters in the history of Australian racing".
