Winx Cruises in Trial
The world's best racehorse, Winx, made a typically pleasing return to the track when finishing seventh in a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday. Making the first public appearance of her spring preparation, Winx looked in superb order when coasting to the line and finishing 3.6 lengths behind former top filly She Will Reign in the star-studded 900 metre heat. The performances of Gr1 winners Takedown (2nd), Kementari (3rd) and Ace High (8th) would also have pleased their respective connections, but not so Team Hawkes, who watched on with dismay as star sprinter Chautauqua once again failed to leave the gates. Winx, who recorded her 18th Group 1 victory and equalled Black Caviar's record of 25 consecutive wins when strolling to a commanding win in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April, is being aimed at an unprecedented fourth Cox Plate victory in the spring. "We're still 30 days out from her first-up run,'' said trainer Chris Waller. "There's still fine tuning to do but I was really happy with what I saw this morning.'' Winx's regular rider Hugh Bowman concurred saying the rising 7YO felt as good as ever. "When I got on she pricked her ears...she's happy to be back,'' said Bowman. "She was a little edgy in the gates, which is not unusual, but she jumped very well and felt superb in the trial." Bowman added: "We've never seen her perform at her best in trials, this morning was about going through the motions and releasing that nervous energy.'' Waller said Winx would trial again in early August and possibly have an exhibition gallop before she opens her spring campaign in the eponymous Group 1 Winx Stakes (previously Warwick Stakes) at Royal Randwick on 18 August.
TRIAL REPLAY: WINX went through her gears cleanly in a nice piece of work at Rosehill this morning. Hugh, Chris and the team are very happy with her. Vision: @SkyRacingAU // #gowinx #winxhorse pic.twitter.com/2VvcyaEKa5— Winx (Official) (@winx_horse) July 22, 2018
