Cloud Hangs Over Chautauqua

Tuesday, 24th July 2018

There is mounting speculation that the career of outstanding sprinter Chautauqua could just about be over after the popular grey once again failed to leave the gates in a barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday morning. The six-time Group 1 winner was required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being allowed to race again after he refused to jump from the stalls on four separate occasions earlier this year. But alas, it was not to be. Lining up in the opening 900m heat of the morning against a star-studded field that included Winx, Kementari and Ace High, Chautauqua stood as still as a statue when the stalls sprung open, despite the urgings of jockey Tommy Berry. "As soon as he walked into the gates I knew he wasn't going to jump," Berry said. "He leaned back in the barriers. The other day he was kicking around and wanted to get on with the job but for some reason that wasn't the case. Apart from that I was happy with him, he felt the same. It's just disappointing." Hawkes Racing and Chautauqua's owners are expected to make an announcement about the horse's future in the coming days.
