Gr1 Targets for Sunlight

Tuesday, 17th July 2018

Trainer Tony McEvoy says he is not afraid of taking on open class company in the spring with classy filly Sunlight if her form warrants it. Sunlight (Zoustar-Solar Charged, by Charge Forward) established herself as one of the best 2YOs in the country winning 5 of her 7 starts, including the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes, before rounding out her juvenile season with a third placing in the Group 1 Golden Slipper in Sydney. "She's done very well during her break. The Lightning at Morphettville at the end of the month might be an option before the Quezette if I think she needs a hit-out," McEvoy told racenet. "It's the very early stages but she's getting a tremendous base on her. I haven't tested if she's got better but the one thing I do know is she hasn't got any worse. The first two races will tell us if we want to go through the sprint races like the McEwen or the Moir." McEvoy added: "I'm always concerned about taking on the older horses but if there's an opportunity for a filly with no weight on her back to run in a Group One, I'll take it."
