Melbourne Cup Breeders Receive Trophies
Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chairman Amanda Elliott presented the 2016 and 2017 Melbourne Cup Breeder’s trophies to connections of Almandin and Rekindling at Newmarket’s July Cup meeting in the UK on Saturday. The Hon Peter Stanley accepted the iconic miniature three-handled trophy on behalf of the owners of Gestüt Schlenderhan, the German stud farm where Almandin was born on March 27, 2010. "It is the most fantastic race, there is no race with more atmosphere in the entire world and it is really truly the greatest honour," said Stanley. The breeders of last year’s winner Rekindling, Wendy and Andrew Pocock, were also on hand for the special presentation. Having bred thoroughbreds for over 40 years, Andrew Pocock said it was wonderful to be recognised by the VRC. "It's a very special moment. This was our first ever Group 1 winner. When he got clear on the final bend, it was rather an extraordinary experience," he said. Mrs Elliott said it is important to recognise the role played by breeders in the racing industry and the VRC is proud to acknowledge them. "The journey of the Melbourne Cup is a very long one and we decided some years ago that the journey starts with the breeders."
