Colt Makes Brutal Debut

Monday, 16th July 2018

Team Hawkes unveiled a likely 3YO spring contender when 2YO New Zealand-bred colt Brutal lived up to his name when demolishing his rivals at Caulfield on Saturday. Making his debut in the blue and gold lightning bolt silks made famous by Chautauqua for prominent owner Rupert Legh, Brutal looked a colt of significant potential when leading throughout for an emphatic 5 length win in the Ladbrokes.com.au Handicap over 1200m. Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the stable had been patient with Brutal. "We thought he could win but I don't know whether you expect them to win by four or five and do what he did," said Hawkes. "He's an O'Reilly and quite often the O'Reilly's need a bit of time." Jockey Dwayne Dunn said the win was just a glimpse of what was to come from Brutal. "He showed a lot last preparation but to Team Hawkes credit they tipped him out," Dunn said. "He's a kid that has got so much more talent to come through natural raceday experience." From the Gr3-placed mare Alberton Princess, Brutal is a full-brother to Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) winner Talaria. Brutal was purchased by Hawkes Racing for $220,000 at the 2017 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale from the draft of Mapperley Stud.
