Berry To Ride Mighty Grey

Thursday, 12th July 2018

The Hong Kong Jockey Club have granted Tommy Berry special leave to return to Australia and ride Chautauqua in what is shaping as a career-defining jump-out for the former world's best sprinter at Flemington tomorrow. The six-time Group 1 winner must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before he can race again after refusing to jump from the stalls on four separate occasions when attempting to trial earlier this year. "Tommy Berry's going to come back from Hong Kong and ride him in the jump-out on Friday," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told racing.com. "We spoke about it and thought, 'you know what, it's our last-ditch effort, let's leave no stone unturned'. Not that the other boys had done anything wrong with him, but Tommy's won five Group Ones on him, and if he rides him and it doesn't happen, we've done everything we possibly can." Hawkes said Chautauqua, a winner of more than $8 million in earnings, owes connections nothing, but that he would like to see him have one final campaign. Berry agreed: "He's been a great horse to me, owes nothing but I'd love to see him turn up for another campaign," he said. "He's a genuine superstar capable of anything on his day."
