Chautauqua To Trial Friday

Wednesday, 11th July 2018

The racing career of former star sprinter Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) will be on the line when he contests a crucial 800 metre jump-out at Flemington on Friday, reports racing.com. The six-time Group 1 winner was a surprise absentee from the autumn carnival after he refused to jump from the stalls on four separate occasions when attempting to trial earlier this year. He was consequently banned from racing and must now trial to the satisfaction of stewards twice before he can race again. "He's feeling pretty good and he looks a million dollars," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said. "But he's got to jump out of the gates. At the moment he's got an embargo and cannot race." Hawkes said connections would love to see the popular grey secure a slot for the $13 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 13 October. "He's got a few hurdles to jump yet but he's as good as we can get him," said Hawkes. "He is great and I mean that in all seriousness. I wouldn't change a thing."
