James Optimistic Ahead Of New Season
With the new racing season just around the corner, Cambridge-based trainer Roger James is bullish that a number of precocious new prospects have the talent to reinvigorate the 2YO dimension of his stable and add depth to his burgeoning middle distance division, reports NZ Racing Desk. Teaming again with racing manager Robert Wellwood, James has earmarked Sherrif, Rondonella and Hanger as horses on an upward spiral, "We don't have a big team, but we've got a strong team right across the board. Horses like Sherrif, Rondinella and Hanger are untapped and I think they could be absolutely top class. They can all win races quite quickly before we look at something more serious. I'll be surprised if in the autumn all three aren't looking at Australian targets." Sheriff has already saluted in stakes company with a victory in the Gr3 Manawatu Classic (2000m), while Hanger has a 3rd in Gr3 company (Cambridge Breeders' Stakes 1200m) and Rondinella is 1 from 4 so far with grander plans in store. James and Wellwood have also taken a dip back into the 2YO market with James noting, "For the first time in a long time I went out and bought two-year-old types, people think I might not be a two-year-old trainer but I've had three champion youngsters in Spring Rain, Thriller and One Under." He added, "I have tended to buy more classic types of horses, but now we've got a Hinchinbrook, a Written Tycoon and a couple of Showcasings to look forward to."
