Roaring Lion Wins Gr1 Eclipse Stakes
Roaring Lion survived a protest from the runner-up Saxon Warrior to claim his maiden Group 1 success when landing the Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) at Sandown in the UK on Saturday. Trained by John Gosden, the US-bred Roaring Lion (Kitten's Joy-Vionnet, by Street Sense) crossed the line a mere neck ahead of the Ballydoyle-owned Saxon Warrior but connections of both horses had to wait after the prized colts appeared to come together over the concluding stages. However, stewards deemed the interference insufficient to reverse the placings and the talented Qatar Racing-owned colt advanced his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Dante Stakes) from 9 starts for £835,082 in earnings. Roaring Lion's victory also provided 22YO jockey Oisin Murphy with his first Gr1 winner. "I'm delighted I got the job done for Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing, for John Gosden, all the staff, and for my family. This is what I've wanted to be achieving," Murphy told Sky Sports. "This is top now in all of my achievements. It's great, but I want to do more." Gosden was thrilled for Murphy whom he said rode a tactically smart race. "Oisin rode a clever race. We discussed options but you have to leave the jockey with an blank canvas. The smaller the field the trickier it gets, but he wasn't going to get himself in any trouble and I thought he timed his run perfectly," said Gosden. Gosden said Roaring Lion would now head to next month's Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes (2000m) at York.
