Rekindling & Latrobe Unlikely for Cup
Lloyd Williams has revealed that Rekindling and Johannes Vermeer, winner and runner-up respectively of last year's Melbourne Cup, are unlikely to line up again for the 2018 edition of Australia's most famous race, reports racing.com. "Very unlikely that you will see them in the Cup," Williams told Melbourne's Radio Sport National yesterday. "We'll see them probably in weight-for-age races but they will be up too far in the weights." Williams said 3YO Irish-bred colt Latrobe, winner of Saturday's Group 1 Irish Derby at The Curragh, was also an unlikely Cup runner. "He's only a three-year-old so to bring them out here they have to be down at the bottom of the weights because they are conceding time to the other horses," Williams said. "I would be surprised if you see him but I am always keen on a Melbourne Cup." He added: "If they gave him some sort of opportunity of being competitive in the race at the weights I would obviously consider bringing him out but there's a big question mark at the moment."
