Burnewang North Farewells Wonderful Matriarch
The Hains family's Burnewang North has farewelled its beautifully bred matriarch Rose of Portland who was laid to rest recently. At 25 years, Rose Of Portland was a wonderful producer and enjoyed her final years of retirement happily grazing on the lush green pastures of the Rochester stud. Cathy Hains, daughter of Burnewang North founder and Australian thoroughbed breeding pioneer David Hains, tweeted: "VALE Rosie. It is with much sadness that we lay to rest our beautiful matriarch Rose of Portland (aged 25) but do so knowing she has lived a wonderful life. Go well Rosie Girl – Cathy Hains." The US-bred Rose of Portland was one of the best-bred mares in the Australian Stud Book coming from a long line of Kingston Park bred superstars, both on the track and in the breeding barn. By Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew out of VRC Oaks & Australian Derby winner Rose Of Kingston, the Group 3-winning Rose Of Portland was a half-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule. Rose Of Kingston, in turn, was a half-sister to VRC Oaks, Rosehill Guineas & Canterbury Guineas winner Spirit Of Kingston, dam of Victoria Derby winner Portland Player.
