Gun Runner Steps Up Pegasus Preparation
Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) continued his preparation for next month's Pegasus World Cup with an impressive five-furlong breeze in 1:00 4/5 at Fair Grounds Racecourse and Slots on Sunday, reports Blood Horse. The Breeders' Cup Classic winner is set to have his final career start in the US$16 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on 27 January. "Like expected, he is picking it up nicely," trainer Steve Asmussen said. "Angel [track rider Angel Garcia] said he felt wonderful and was happy with him." Asmussen added: "He's a very special horse. I think how he has responded to work, races, everything is what has separated him. Having tremendous talent is one part of the equation of a champion, which I believe he's proved to be." Gun Runner, who will retire to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky after the Pegasus, stamped himself as the new king of North American racing with his fourth successive Group 1 triumph and his fifth overall in the BC Classic. His record currently reads 11 wins from 17 starts for US$9,037,138 in earnings.
