At Awapuni in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a Group race success when 3YO New Zealand-bred filly Savvy Coup (Savabeel-Eudora, by Pins) secured some valuable black-type with an impressive win in the $70,000 Gr3 Eulogy Stakes (1550m) for 3YO fillies, defeating Dijon Bleu & Contessa Vanessa. A $65,000 purchase at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Waikato Stud, Savvy Coup improved her record to 3 wins and 2 placings from 8 starts for $89,250 in earnings. Savvy Coup will now be aimed at the Gr1 Levin Classic (1600m) at Trentham on 13 January and the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at the same venue on 17 March. "We've always had confidence in the filly, very happy with the result," co-trainer Matthew Pitman told NZ Racing Desk. Savvy Coup's dam Eudora is a full-sister to the stakes winners Legless Veuve and Tootsie, while the latter is the dam of the talented recent Gr2 Tauranga Stakes winner Ocean Emperor. Waikato Stud will offer a brother (Lot 190) to Savvy Coup at the Book 1 sale at Karaka next month.
