Wellington Targets for Kawi

Tuesday, 12th December 2017

Top-class Kiwi galloper Kawi (Savabeel-Magic Time, by Volksraad) is likely to be aimed at either the Gr1 Thorndon Mile or Gr1 Telegraph in the New Year, reports NZ Racing Desk. Kawi's win in last Saturday's Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham saw him post the seventh top-flight success of his career, equalling the number of Group 1 titles of champion mare Seachange. The 7YO needs just one more to equal the feat of former two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year Mufhasa who holds the record of eight domestic Group 1 wins. "He's won seven Group Ones now and he ain't finished yet," trainer Allan Sharrock said.  "He won't be going to Ellerslie though for the Zabeel Classic, if I'm going to run him over 2000m again it will be toward the end of his season." Sharrock added: "They are the options and we can put the blinkers on if it's the Telegraph, if we decide not to it will be the Thorndon."
