Zabeel Firms As Hiflyer Target

Wednesday, 6th December 2017

Richly talented Kiwi galloper Hiflyer is likely to have his next start in the Gr1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, reports NZ Racing Desk. The 5YO stamped himself as a genuine Zabell Classic contender after overcoming trouble in running to score an eye-catching win in the Gr3 Eagle Technology Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie last weekend. "Although nothing is set in concrete just yet, at this stage I'm leaning toward the Zabeel Classic. I think he'll get the 2000m," trainer Peter Lock said. "There's also the Rich Hill Mile, but he's not a big, gross horse and I think that he would get too much weight. He's rated 103 now and he would get 59 or 60kg." The Zabeel Classic would also fit in well with a following run in the Gr1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on 20 January. "We could freshen him. The Thorndon is set weights and penalties and it's been a goal for a long, long time but if we were lucky enough to win the Zabeel then that could change," Lock said. Long-term, Lock says he would love to campaign Hiflyer across the Tasman. "We've always wanted to go to Australia and I think he's up to the better horses there," he said. "He's maturing all the time and learning his craft. I think he will be an even better horse next preparation." Bred and part-owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, Hiflyer is by Tavistock out of the Stravinsky mare Lady Firebird and hails from the outstanding female family of champion Australian racehorse Might And Power and 4-time Gr1 winning filly Mosheen.
