Gun Runner Works Ahead of Pegasus
Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) has had his first timed workout since winning the US$6 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on 4 November, reports Blood Horse. The Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner (Candy Ride-Quiet Giant, by Giant's Causeway) worked over an easy half-mile in :51 2/5 at Fair Grounds on Monday in preparation for his final career start in the US$16 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on 27 January. "First breeze back after the Classic, quite a bit of travel, a lot of things obviously have transpired since then with the announcement that he's going to run in the Pegasus and that being his last race," Asmussen said. "With the holiday season coming up, we got back on the work tab a touch sooner than planned. But the weather is great right now, the surface at the Fair Grounds is excellent and he's wanting to do something." He added: "I just wanted him to settle in and relax...and get back into the routine." The 4YO chestnut stamped himself as the new king of North American racing with his fourth successive Group 1 triumph and his fifth overall in the BC Classic. His record currently reads 11 wins from 17 starts for US$9,037,138 in earnings.
