At Otaki in New Zealand, former Westbury Stud triple Gr1-winning shuttler Makfi (Dubawi-Dhelaal, by Green Desert) added a Group race success when 3YO New Zealand-bred gelding Matchbreaker (Makfi-Pineau, by Carnegie) opened his stakes account with a narrow but determined win in the $70,000 Gr3 Lucia Valentina Wellington Stakes (1600m) for 3YOs, defeating Trail Blazer & Divine Power. Passed in shy of his $45,000 reserve at the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Matchbreaker advanced his record to 2 wins and 1 placing from 3 starts for $48,875 in earnings. From the Carnegie mare Pineau, Matchbreaker is a half-brother to Listed CJC Welcome Stakes winner Dancer's Tale and hails from the family of Gr1 winner Prince Ruling, Gr2 winner Dopff, and dual Gr3 winner Ready To Lift. Trainer Fraser Auret said the win was a taste of what is to come from the highly regarded Matchbreaker. "He's a beautiful horse going forward that's for sure, he's got a lot of improvement to come," he told NZ Racing Desk.
