7YO Wins Debut

Friday, 1st December 2017

It is not often that a 7YO racehorse makes a winning debut, reports Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria (TBV) News. But that's just what Makahu Boy, a homebred for Cloverlea Farm at Euroa, did at Wodonga last week. By former Blue Gum sire Churchill Downs, the Steve Cunningham trainee scored a narrow victory at odds of $31. "He was a very big foal, that needed time," breeder and owner Wayne Ross said. "We didn't break him in until he was four, and even then, he was prone to splints. He showed he could gallop, and after a couple more years off in the paddock, for personal reasons, he has finally had his chance to race." Named after a river in New Zealand, Makahu Boy is out of the Lacryma Cristi mare Mellocello and hails from the family of Gr3 Merson Cooper Stakes & Debutant Stakes winner How Proud, and Listed winners Lemon Sorbet and Lemon Twist.
