At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, deceased former White Robe Lodge stallion Yamanin Vital (Sir Tristram-She Might Hula, by Caucasus) added a Group race success when 9YO New Zealand-bred gelding Who Shot Thebarman (Yamanin Vital-Ears Carol, by Carolingian) posted his first win almost two years when saluting in the $300,000 Gr2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) for 3YO+, defeating Libran & Cismontane. Who Shot Thebarman, who is owned by New Zealand-based siblings Dan, Humphrey, Michael and Shaun O'Leary, improved his record to 10 wins (including the Gr1 Auckland Cup, Gr2 Zipping Classic & Gr2 Avondale Cup) and 10 placings (including the Gr1 Melbourne Cup & Gr1 Sydney Cup) from 47 starts for NZ$3,180,711 in earnings. Who Shot Thebarman will now line up for his fourth Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, 7 November. However, he will have to defy history as no 9YO has ever won Australia's most famous race. "You'll see him on the first Tuesday on November," trainer Chris Waller told racing.com. "He's been in the race three times…It's not just about winning the Melbourne Cup, it's about being a part of the event and it's very hard to deny owners that opportunity when they buy these horses, look after them for so long and dream like we're all entitled to."
