At Trentham in New Zealand, Cambridge Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Tavistock (Montjeu-Upstage, by Quest For Fame) added a Group race success when highly regarded 5YO gelding Hiflyer (Tavistock-Lady Firebird, by Stravinsky) took the first step towards fulfilling his potential with a maiden stakes win in the $70,000 Gr3 Thomson Handicap (1600m) for 3YO+, defeating Amarula & Ringo. Bred and part-owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, Hiflyer is out of the Stravinsky mare Lady Firebird and hails from the outstanding female family of champion Australian racehorse Might And Power and 4-time Gr1 winning filly Mosheen. He improved his record to 7 wins and 7 placings (including the Gr2 Easter Handicap) from 17 starts for NZ$194,460 in earnings. Sir Patrick Hogan said the exciting Hiflyer, who trainer Peter Lock has previously described as the best horse he has ever trained, was likely to target domestic Group One races before embarking on a trans-Tasman campaign. "My vote would be to stay here for races like the Thorndon Mile and the Zabeel Classic and if he can win them then perhaps Australia in the autumn," Sir Patrick told NZ Racing Desk.
