Winx Primed for Historic Cox Plate Bid
Chris Waller has provided the final word on Winx ahead of tomorrow's Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley. Winx, with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, had her final serious gallop at Waller's Melbourne base at Flemington yesterday morning. "She did three-quarter pace work this morning," Waller said. "Hugh [Bowman] and I were just chatting about how she was compared to last year; she basically did the same work this morning, and everything went to plan." Waller added: "Heading into this year's Cox Plate, we're trying to keep everything in a similar pattern to last year, and thankfully everything's gone well." Waller suggested Winx may be an even better horse this year, a demoralising thought for her rivals on Saturday. "Condition-wise, she's carrying more weight," he said. "That, to me, would suggest she's become a stronger horse. She's now a very strong horse carrying a bit more muscle - does it really make them run faster? I don't know. Potentially it could make them a little more explosive." Winx, currently rated a $1.15 chance with TAB for the $3 million weight-for-age feature, will be out to create history by joining the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three Cox Plates. Victory will also provide Winx with her 22nd consecutive win and her 15th at Group One level, and see her surpass Makybe Diva as the greatest prize money earner in Australian racing history.
