Chautauqua Ready to Show Best

Friday, 27th October 2017

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes has described Chautauqua's work in the lead-up to tonight's $1 million Gr1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley as the best he's ever seen, reports racing.com. Officially rated the world's best sprinter, Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) is yet to win in three runs this campaign since his breathtaking and unprecedented third successive victory in the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes in the autumn. However, Chautauqua, now aged seven, showed he still possesses his trademark booming finish as evidenced by his fast-finishing fourth behind Redzel in The Everest (1200m) two weeks ago. "I reckon he's better. It's pretty hard for a seven-year-old to come back and be better," said Hawkes, who prepares the grey flash in partnership with his father John and brother Michael. "His work Tuesday morning was the best I've ever seen." Chautauqua, who won this race in 2015 (see below) is currently rated a $7 chance with TAB for the Manikato behind race favourite Vega Magic at $2.25.
