NJC Announces Max Lees Classic

Thursday, 26th October 2017

Newcastle Jockey Club has announced that a new race for juveniles – the Max Lees Classic – will be run for the first time on Sunday, 3 December, reports racingnsw.com.au. NJC has been working with Racing NSW about establishing an annual race to honour the late Broadmeadow trainer who was most famous for training 1977 2YO Triple Crown champion Luskin Star. NJC's chief executive, Matt Benson, said the Max Lees Classic for 2YOs would be run over 900 metres and carry prize money of $50,000. "I think the aim is to develop it into a bigger race in the future," Benson said. "The timing is perfect at the beginning of December." Benson continued: "It rolls into the Inglis race in Sydney and it's before the Magic Millions at Wyong, so those horses are hunting for prize money at that time of the year to qualify…hopefully trainers will factor that into their plans."
