Malaguerra Set to Strike in Manikato
The connections of Malaguerra (Magnus-Tennessee Morn, by Bletchingly) have warned punters not to overlook the classy sprinter in Friday night's star-studded Gr1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. The $1 million feature is likely to attract a top quality field of speedsters with the likes of Everest winner Redzel, the world's highest rated sprinter Chautauqua, Vega Magic and Redkirk Warrior all nominated for the race. But Manny Gelagotis, stable representative for his trainer brother Peter, says Malaguerra should be included among the winning prospects. Gelagotis says the dual Gr1 winner has been set for the race and his first up 7th (beaten just 2.2 lengths) behind She Will Reign in the Gr1 Moir Stakes (1000m) on 29 September has his primed to run a big race. "This has been the target race for the horse all along and the Moir was always going to be the stepping stone," Gelagotis told racing.com. "He galloped well this morning so we are really pleased with the way he's going to present on Friday." He added: "It's an open race but there are going to be some really quality horses running, of which he is one of them." Damien Oliver is the new rider for Malaguerra replacing the suspended Ben Melham.
