Irish Stayer to Back Up in Cup

Tuesday, 17th October 2017

Coolmore have confirmed that Irish stayer Johannes Vermeer (Galileo-Inca Princess, by Holy Roman Emperor) will back up in Saturday's $3.15 million Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), reports racing.com. The Aidan O'Brien trained 4YO put in an eye-catching Cup trial when flashing home for second on his Australian debut in last weekend's Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) in Melbourne. "He ran very well; we thought as much, he was absolutely flying since he got here, I think since he got here his work has come on again," O'Brien's travelling foreman, TJ Comerford said. "Johannes Vermeer is going to run again this weekend because he is very well and, in fairness, the jockey never knocked him about. He came out of the race so well, it was actually like a piece of work for him." Comerford added: "He had a lovely race. He came back, ate up at night and that is where we are now - I'm 100 per cent happy with him." There is no doubt Johannes Vermeer has the class to win a Caulfield Cup having won the Gr1 Criterium International in France as a juvenile. Johannes Vermeer has been allocated 54.5kg for the Caulfield Cup.
