At Matamata in New Zealand, Westbury Stud's three-time Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Makfi (Dubawi-Dhelaal, by Green Desert) added a black-type success when 5YO bay mare Cote d'Or (Makfi- Our Echezeaux, by Zabeel) claimed her first stakes victory when powering home from the rear of the field in the $50,000 Listed Matamata Cup (1600m) for 3YO+, defeating Big Dreamer & Tessastock. Sporting the Pencarrow Stud colours of owner Sir Peter Vela, the beautifully bred Cote d'Or improved her record to 7 wins and 4 placings from 14 starts for $110,510 in earnings. "She got a long way off them and I was a bit concerned - it was a big effort," co-trainer Ken Kelso told NZ Racing Desk. "She's very, very smart. She's just little, but she's a bulldog. She's very competitive." Kelso is unsure where the mare will head next and said he would discuss her immediate future with owner Sir Peter Vela's racing manager Garry Cossey. Cote d'Or's dam Our Echezeaux is a daughter of Richebourg (Vice Regal), making her a half-sister to Romanee Conti, the dam of Melbourne and Caulfield Cup heroine Ethereal. She is also a full-sister to Australasian Oaks winner Grand Echezeaux, the dam of 5-time Gr1-winning sire Darci Brahma and Gr3 winner Burgundy. Our Echezeaux who has already produced Group winners Dolmabache and Pure Elegance.
