Grand Finale of NZB Spring WFA Championship
The 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Caulfield Spring Weight-For-Age Championship is set for an exciting conclusion with the running of the fourth and final leg, the $1 million Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Saturday. Hartnell won the Gr2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and finished second in the Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m), earning 18 points and a position at the top of the table. With 10 points available to the winner on Saturday, only star Kiwi mare Bonneval is within striking distance of Hartnell. Purchased at the 2015 Premier Sale at Karaka for $150,000, Bonneval has won six Group races in succession, including the Gr1 New Zealand Oaks, Gr1 Australian Oaks, and Gr1 Underwood Stakes. Adding interest to Saturday's race will be the presence of several internationals, headed by the Aidan O'Brien-trained pair of Johannes Vermeer and Taj Mahal, while fellow Irish trainer Willie Mullins will be represented by Riven Light. The Caulfield Stakes will be run as Race 7 with a starting time of 3.50pm (5.50pm NZT).
