English To Peak in Everest

Wednesday, 11th October 2017

The Tulloch stable of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott believe top sprinting mare English is ready to peak third-up in Saturday's inaugural $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick. A winner of the Gr1 All Aged Stakes last year, English had a mixed autumn campaign before resuming with an encouraging fourth behind in-form speedster Redzel in the Gr2 Shorts (1100m) on 16 September. The 5YO then rounded out her Everest preparation with a fast-finishing second to In Her Time in the Gr2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick eleven days ago. Bott said English, who will represent slot holder TAB in The Everest, was given a solid hit-out on the course proper at Canterbury on Monday. "We brought her to Canterbury to give her a good strong hit out. We put the blinkers on Monday morning as being out there by herself we just wanted to make sure she was fully focused and to switch her on ahead of Saturday," Bott told racingnsw.com.au. "She probably just peaked on her run the last 50m in the Premiere so there was certainly improvement to come out of that and I think we've seen that in between races." He added: "When she is allowed to switch off and relax she has got that brilliant turn of foot so that's her real asset – her acceleration. If she can conserve energy, she is more brilliant at the finish. We're just glad to be a part of it [The Everest] and that we have a live chance."
