Chautauqua Primed for Everest

Tuesday, 10th October 2017

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes has warned punters not to write off a champion as Chautauqua prepares for Saturday’s $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick. Some experts have labelled the champion sprinter’s first two runs this preparation – 7th in the Gr2 Shorts over 1100m and 6th in the Gr2 Premiere Stakes over 1200m – as slightly disappointing, but Hawkes says the mighty grey is exactly where the stable want him to be. “One thing you can’t do with champions is you can’t forget about them,” Hawkes told racingnsw.com.au. “We’ve set him for this race all along and can’t fault him.” The doubters were also out in force in the autumn before Chautauqua silenced them with a breathtaking win in the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes, becoming the only horse in history to win three editions of the race. “He is the best sprinter in the world at the moment and has already done it. Everyone expects horses to win all the time but that’s not what he is about,” Hawkes said. “He is in the right frame of mind and exactly where you want him to be…with a bit of luck, he’ll be right there.”
