Winx Crowned Australian HOTY

Monday, 9th October 2017

Winx was last night crowned Australian Horse of the Year for the second straight year at an awards ceremony hosted by Racing Queensland in Brisbane. The honour comes as the Chris Waller-trained mare prepares to create history by joining the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three Cox Plates at Moonee Valley on 28 October, following her stunning win in the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Waller claimed the Bart Cummings Award as the leading Group One winning trainer for 2016/17, while Winx’s regular jockey Hugh Bowman won the Champion Group One Jockey Award. Remarkably, Winx finished 115 votes ahead of her nearest rival, Hartnell, with Chautauqua, Black Heart Bart and Almandin rounding out the nominees. The Australian Champion Racehorse category winners were:

  • Australian Racehorse of the Year – Winx
  • Champion Middle Distance – Winx
  • Champion 2YO – She Will Reign
  • Champion 3YO Filly – Yankee Rose
  • Champion 3YO Colt or Gelding – Flying Artie
  • Champion Sprinter – Chautauqua
  • Champion Stayer – Jameka
  • Champion Jumper – Wells
  • Champion Gr1 Jockey – Hugh Bowman
  • The Bart Cummings Award – Chris Waller
  • Champion Sire - Snitzel
