Winx Ready to Rumble

Friday, 6th October 2017

Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman have given a final progress report on Winx ahead of tomorrow's Gr1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, reports racing.com. The superstar mare was put through her final paces for the $500,000 feature on Flemington's steeple grass yesterday morning. The Turnbull will be Winx's final preparatory run for the $3 million Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 28 October, in which she will launch her historic bid to join the legendary Kingston Town as the only horse to win three editions of the great race. "To my eye, she's in great form," trainer Chris Waller told the assembled media yesterday morning. "Her work's been good, highlighted on Monday morning by a sharp piece of work, so therefore this morning she didn't need to do a lot. It was a pretty relaxed workout at three-quarter pace." Waller continued: "Hugh was happy, I was happy, the strapper's happy and I couldn't change anything." Bowman said he was looking forward to once again riding Winx in Melbourne, pointing out that, in his opinion, she prefers the anti-clockwise direction of racing. He is also excited about partnering with her for the first time at Flemington. "In my opinion she actually prefers leading with her Melbourne leg," the champion Sydney jockey said. "She just seems to be more comfortable going through her gears when she's leading through her near-side." He added: "I think it's [Flemington] the best track in Australia. It's a very fair racetrack and the best horse wins generally at Flemington most of the time so let's hope that happens on the weekend." Winx will be chasing her 21st consecutive win and her 14th at Group One level in the Turnbull.
