Francis Fine For Caulfield Cup

Thursday, 5th October 2017

Despite suffering a "superficial knock" recently, Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby is confident 8YO gelding Francis of Assisi will line up in the Gr1 Caulfield Cup on October 21, reports theinformant.co.nz. In fact, Appleby's foreman Chris Connett was eagerly declaring his talented stayer "all systems go" at the Werribee quarantine centre. Already showing a liking for Australian conditions with Gr3 Bendigo Cup and Gr3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes victories on his CV from last spring, Francis of Assisi will be looking to recapture that form after a last start 8 of 11 in the UK in the Rose of Lancaster in August to Frankel colt Frankuus. Connett elaborated, "That run up at Haydock wasn't obviously the greatest run but he's come on in leaps and bounds from that and he just seems to thrive down here in Australia, so we're very happy with him." With Kerrin McEvoy committed to last start Gr1 Underwood Stakes winner Bonneval in the Caulfield showpiece, and regular rider William Buick still recovering from a recent race fall, a jockey for Francis of Assisi is still to be confirmed.
