At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Haunui Farm shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic-Pastorale, by Nureyev) celebrated an elite success when 4YO New Zealand-bred entire Jon Snow (Iffraaj-Orinda, by O'Reilly) outstayed his rivals with a strong on-pace win in the $200,000 Gr3 JRA Cup (2040m) for 3YO+, defeating Ecuador & Boom Time. Jon Snow, who was purchased by his co-trainer Andrew Forsman for $65,000 at the 2015 NZB Select Yearling Sale from the draft of Haunui Farm, advanced his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Australian Derby & Gr2 Tulloch Stakes) and 5 placings (including the Gr1 ARC New Zealand Derby) from 15 starts for $1,741,870 in earnings. "That was pleasing," co-trainer Murray Baker said of Jon Snow's return to form. "We thought he would go a bit better tonight. He needed the distance. He's a good stayer." Jon Snow – who is being aimed at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring - hails from the top-producing NZ family of Gr1 Maori Stakes winner Culminate, New Zealand Oaks winner Solveig, Lion Brown Sprint (now Gr1 Waikato Sprint) winner Soliloquy, and Gr3-winning sire Greig.
