Trainer Talks Up Zarkava Filly

Thursday, 28th September 2017

As Zarak prepares to attempt to emulate his famous mum Zarkava in Sunday’s Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre has expressed his fondness for another of the 2008 Arc winner’s progeny, reports Racing Post. Zarak (Dubawi), a winner of the Gr1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud over the Arc distance of 2400m in July, is the first foal of Zarkava but it his little sister Zarkamiya (Frankel) that has Royer-Dupre especially excited. "Zarak was a bit out of the ordinary right from the start," said Royer-Dupre. "But behind him there is a filly by Frankel who is absolutely ravishing, beautiful to look at and a very good mover. So it looks like Zarkava will turn out to be a good broodmare." He added: "Although Zarkava never looked like she was having a hard time when she was racing it often happens that the first produce of the real champions are a little bit below what is required and then it starts to come right later." The exceptional Zarkava (Zamindar) won all seven of her starts at two and three, culminating with her victory in the 2008 Arc where she swept through the field from an unpromising position to score by 2-lengths. She was the first filly or mare since Urban Sea (the dam of Galileo & Sea The Stars) in 1993 to win the Arc. Zarkava won another four Gr1s, including the French Triple Crown for fillies, and was named 2008 European Horse of the Year.
