She Will Reign to Defy History?
Gary Portelli is quietly confident that She Will Reign can overcome the Golden Slipper hoodoo when she resumes in tomorrow night’s Gr1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley. Most Golden Slipper winners fail to take the next step as 3YOs and Portelli is hoping the daughter of Manhattan Rain can buck that trend. “There are two ways to look at it. Either you think you have the best horse in the world, and it is pretty easy to fall that way after you win the Golden Slipper, or you look back at the record of two-year-olds coming out of the Slipper and taking on older horses and you get back to reality,” Portelli told ANZ Bloodstock News. “That is where we are at and we are unsure how we are going to go. I think every trainer of a Golden Slipper winner has gone into their first up run as a three-year-old confident that they have the best horse and come away wondering what the hell happened.” Portelli added: “We just hope we aren’t in that category. We have done everything we possibly can to prevent the filly being underdone or not right for the race.” She Will Reign will use the Moir as her only preparatory run for the $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 14 October.
