Pinot Ripe for Oaks Success

Thursday, 28th September 2017

Beautifully bred filly Pinot firmed into equal favouritism for November's Gr1 VRC Oaks (registered as Kennedy Oaks) after dominating her rivals in the Kennedy Oaks Trial (1800m) at Flemington yesterday. Courtesy of an adroit ride by Stephen Baster who settled her just behind the leaders on the fence, Pinot gained an inside run midway down the straight to bound clear for an easy 3.75 length win over Think Diamonds and Sweet Mischief. Roger Elliott, stable representative for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, confirmed the VRC Oaks was Pinot's primary spring target. "We were pretty confident she could win today as she's been going really well," he told racing.com. "She was held up a little bit on the corner but when she got clear she really strode away." He added: "The Oaks is the plan. Gai is coming down to look at her on Sunday and she'll make a decision about her next start then." By former champion colt Pierro, Pinot will attempt to emulate the Classic success of her mum Dizelle (Zabeel) who won the Gr1 Australian Oaks in 2005. Pinot is now the equal $7 TAB favourite with Aloisia for the VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on 9 November.
