Gr1 Ambitions for Hiflyer

Wednesday, 27th September 2017

Trainer Peter Lock will use an open 1400m event at Te Rapa on Friday 6 October as Hiflyer's final lead-up to the Gr3 Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham, reports NZ Racing Desk. The highly regarded 5YO, who Lock has previously described as the most gifted horse he has ever trained, will be restricted to a light Spring preparation with a view to running in the Gr1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Runner-up in last season's Gr2 Easter Stakes over 1600m, the beautifully related Hiflyer resumed with a fast finishing second over 1200m at Ruakaka on 16 September. "It was a huge run fresh-up and he's come through it nicely," Lock said. "There's no need to over-tax him – we've also got Sir Patrick's race, the Zabeel Classic, a bit later on at the back of our minds for him." Bred and part-owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, Hiflyer is by Cambridge Stud's dual Gr1-winning stallion Tavistock (Montjeu) out of the Stravinsky mare Lady Firebird and hails from the outstanding female family of champion Australian racehorse Might And Power and 4-time Gr1 winning filly Mosheen.
