No Fears for Top Kiwi Colt

Friday, 15th September 2017

Co-trainer Andrew Scott does not envisage Flemington's famous straight will pose any problems for star Kiwi colt Summer Passage (Snitzel-Subsequent, by Encosta de Lago) when he resumes in tomorrow's Gr2 Danehill Stakes (1200m), reports racing.com. A winner of the Gr1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie in March, Summer Passage confirmed his status as one of the best colts in Australasia when last seen finishing second to Invader in the Gr1 Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) in Sydney in April. "We're really fortunate at home at Wexford on a farm there, we've got a 2000-metre straight gallop and he's done a fair bit of work up there and learned to gallop in straight lines," said Scott, who prepares the beautifully related colt in partnership with Lance O'Sullivan. "While that's going to be an aid, raceday pace is still a little bit unknown but he's pretty adept at home and we're confident he's going to handle the straight race." Scott said Summer Passage had had a slow start to his preparation but was now coming to hand nicely. "We've given him two trials and at his second trial he struck some wet ground that day and he probably didn't quite trial as well as we'd hoped," he said. "But since then we've given him a fair bit of work at home and his work has been very pleasing leading into this weekend so that's given us a bit more confidence." Summer Passage is rated a $12 chance with TAB for the Danehill. Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Catchy is favourite at $3.60.
