Summer Passage Ready for Danehill
Top Kiwi colt Summer Passage (Snitzel-Subsequent, by Encosta de Lago) will open his spring campaign in Saturday's Gr2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. A winner of the Gr1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie in March, Summer Passage confirmed his status as one of the best colts in Australasia with a second placing behind Invader in the Gr1 Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) in Sydney in the autumn. "We'll wait and see what happens. They could be a bit too sharp for him," co-trainer Lance O'Sullivan told NZ Racing Desk. "He's much more relaxed this time and we've got two options with him; we can stick to the short trip and go forward to the Coolmore, but if they are a little too fast then we have nominated him for the Caulfield Guineas." O'Sullivan added: "We'll sit down after Saturday and make a decision about which way we go." O'Sullivan, who trains Summer Passage in partnership with Andrew Scott, said the beautifully related colt was fit enough to put up a bold first-up showing. "He's had a couple of quiet trials and he's done all he's been asked to do, he trialled okay without being sensational," he said. "He looks good and there is no doubt there will be natural improvement to come, but Andrew and I both feel he's forward enough to go a really nice race."
