Order Of St George Top Weight for Melbourne Cup
Outstanding Irish stayer Order Of St George has been allocated top weight for the $6.25 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) to be run at Flemington on Tuesday, 7 November. Weights for Australia's most famous race were released yesterday, with Order Of St George receiving the highest weight of 58kg. The Aidan O'Brien-trained son of Galileo looked in supreme order when successfully defending his title with a barnstorming 9 length win in the Irish St Leger on Sunday. Part-owned by 5-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams, Order Of St George is no certainty to make the trip to Australia with Aidan O'Brien commenting on the weekend that the Melbourne Cup was being considered along with the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Order Of St George is currently on the third line of betting with TAB at $17 behind equal favourites Hartnell and defending champion Almandin at $13. Hartnell has been allotted 57.5 kg, while Almandin appears quite well treated with 56.5kg. The German-bred son of Monsun carried 52kg to victory in last year's Cup.
