Changes to Caulfield Cup Penalty Policy
Racing Victoria yesterday announced changes to the way the Caulfield Cup winner is penalised for the Melbourne Cup, reports racing.com. Effective immediately, the Caulfield Cup winner will not receive a penalty for the Melbourne Cup if it has already been allocated 56kg or more. Alternatively, if the Caulfield Cup winner has less than 56kg in the Melbourne Cup, any penalty will not increase the horse's Melbourne Cup weight beyond that mark. The reason for the change is that over the past 40 years it has proven to be very difficult for a Caulfield Cup winner to be placed in the Melbourne Cup with more than 56kg. RV's executive general manager of racing Greg Carpenter said that during that 40-year period, eight winners of the Caulfield Cup have contested the Melbourne Cup with more than 56kg but none have been placed, resulting in a shift in focus away from the Caulfield Cup.
