Keeneland Sept Yearling Sale Begins Today
The 74th edition of the world-renowned Keeneland September Yearling Sale, offering the cream of the North American yearling crop, is underway. This year's sale sees an overhaul of its format, with the biggest change being the ultra-select Book 1 which will see 167 yearlings offered during the opening day's session. Last year Book 1 comprised a total of 607 yearlings catalogued over three days. "There is quite a bit of activity on the grounds and we are very optimistic," said Bob Elliston, Keeneland's vice president of racing and sales. "There are lots of people from across the globe who have not been here in many years. The optics appear that the format is intriguing to the buyers." Elliston explained the reason for the format change thus: "The goal was twofold: one was to create enthusiasm from the very first hip that would hopefully carry through the first week and throughout the rest of the sale," he said. "The second goal was to put as many quality horses in front of those people the first week as possible, and we have nearly doubled the number being offered during the first week. They know they can see many quality horses the first week." The 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale will run from 11-23 September, with a dark day on Friday 15 September.
