Bonneval Still in Cox Plate Mix
The connections of Bonneval have left the door open for the star New Zealand mare to run in this year's Cox Plate, reports racing.com. The dual Oaks winner is now second favourite for the Caulfield Cup after her brilliant first-up win in Saturday's Gr2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley, but Forsman said a start in the world's richest mile-and-a-half handicap was not a foregone conclusion. "She doesn't have to run in a Caulfield Cup," Forsman said. "She's going to have a run at Caulfield before then and the only thing I'd say about Caulfield is that it might be a bit of an awkward track for her to get back and get balanced up on." Bonneval (Makfi-Imposingly, by Zabeel) will make her next appearance in the Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on 1 October, after which a decision will be made regarding which feature to target. "There's no disgrace in running second or third in a Cox Plate so if she's goes to Caulfield and she doesn't get around that well, it gives us that option," he said. "That's something we need to talk about but obviously we'll go through that difficult weight-for-age path up until that point, and see how well Winx is going." Bonneval capped a stellar 2016-17 season when claiming the New Zealand Horse of the Year title in Auckland on Sunday night.
