Hydrangea Wins Gr1 Matron Stakes

Monday, 11th September 2017

At Leopardstown in Ireland, former Coolmore shuttler and triple Gr1-winning champion European sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) celebrated an elite race success when 3YO Irish-bred filly Hydrangea (Galileo-Beauty Is Truth, by Pivotal) upstaged her more fancied Ballydoyle stable-mate when scoring a surprise head win for trainer Aidan O'Brien in the €350,000 Gr1 Matron Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YO fillies, defeating star filly Winter & Persuasive. This was the first top-flight victory for Hydrangea who improved her record to 3 wins (including the Gr3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial) and 6 placings (including the Gr1 Coronation Stakes, Gr1 Fillies' Mile & Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes) from 13 starts for €532,249 in earnings. O'Brien earmarked the Gr1 Prix de l'Opera (10 furlongs) on Arc weekend as a potential target for Hydrangea. As for 4-time Gr1 winner Winter, O'Brien was sanguine about the defeat. "I'm delighted for Hydrangea and for Wayne [jockey Wayne Lordan]. She has been Winter's work partner all year so maybe she turned in and said to her, 'You can have this one today'," he said. "She'd beaten her here earlier in the year, so it's funny how it comes around again."
